We left Kendal around 06:00 for a long drive by coach down to Essex. The rain followed us must of the way, only clearing when we got near to North Weald, where we booked in and then travelled onto Hylands Park the site of the Jamboree. It was only a ten minute walk to Volcano Sub Camp, our home for the week. We quickly collected our hike tents and managed to get most of them up before heavy rain came along.
This photo show us sitting under the newly erected dining shelters having our lunch. |

In the evening of our first day at camp the UK Contingent (all 4,500 of them) were fed at a giant barbecue. By this time the rain had stopped and everything had started to dry up. The only muddy places on the site were parts of the roadway which were used by vehicles and the Adult hub which had a thin layer of mud over large areas. |

Later on a Concert was held for the UK Scouts (the rest of the world weren't arriving until the following day). This provided a great party atmosphere and a great way to start the Jamboree. |

Our Unit was selected to be part of the Opening Ceremony which was due to take place on the Saturday afternoon. We spent a fair proportion of Friday rehearsing in the Main Arena. |

As a lot of our Unit were involved in the Opening Ceremony we were left with only three Scouts and three Leaders to join the rest of our Sub Camp to Parade down to the Main Arena. But we made sure that we flew the Manx and St. George Flags as high as possible. |

The Jamboreee was formally opened the Duke of Kent who is President of the UK Scout Association. Prince William was also there as a Guest. We managed to see some of the rest of our Unit as they carried flags onto the main stage. There was a brilliant atmosphere to the whole proceedings.
In the evening there was a concert for the whole camp in the Main Arena. It started raining at about 21:30 and stopped again by about 06:00 the following morning. Except for a very brief shower we didn't see the rain again until the Closing Ceremony. |

The Isle of Man Post Office were on site doing a good job of promoting the Isle of Man and selling a wide range of Scouting Stamps and Manx First Day Covers. Members of the Unit when they had some spare time helped out. |

Lunch most days was a packed lunch if we were off site or a do it yourself packed lunch if we were on site. This photo shows lunch being prepared by members of the Duty Patrol. |

This is one of the bases in one of the activity zones. This particular base was run by the RNLI. The Manx Scouts were able to give the RNLI Members some information about who started the Lifeboat Institution. |

During the Sunrise Ceremony there was a live link to the Ceremony taking place on Brownsea Island where the first experimental Scout Camp was held one hundred years ago. Over 40,000 Scouts in the Main Arena at Hylands Park renewed their Scout Promise in their own languages. |

After the Ceremony the Scouts got as many people as possible to sign their special yellow Sunrise Kneckers. |

After the Sunrise Ceremony the Scouts visited different faith services around the camp site to experience religions from around the world. |

On one evening there was a Carnival and all the Unit dressed up in luminous suits and had a great time blowing whistles and following the procession around the Jamboree Site. |

In the 'Trash Zone' the Scouts got the chance to create 'music' using old bits of trash. Here's one group getting ready play on exhaust pipes. |

Even with the rain, we all had a great time at the Closing Ceremony. Lots of noise and fireworks. The Scout Flag was passed over to Sweden who are hosting the 2011 World Scout Jamboree. |

On Wednesday we took down our tents and packed up our gear, we then had a long wait for our coach to turn up. |
![]() |
Due to the late arrival of our coach, we missed the 19:00 Seacat from Liverpool and the Manx Scouts had to wait around at Heysham to catch the 02:15 ferry from Heysham the following morning. For an evening meal we popped into a local pub. |
