Isle of Man Scouting email News No. 1 Assistant Island Commissioner Cub Scouts Celia Marshall email celiamarshall@hotmail.com 8.1.02 As was decided at the last joint scouters meeting on 6 December I am planning to extend the distribution of my email newsletter to leaders and others from all sections who are interested in receiving it. If you do not wish to receive it, please let me know. If you would like to be included please email me your address. I would like it to be a general forum for ideas and discussion from a variety of viewpoints, and would encourage anyone to send me ideas or articles to be included. I hope also on occasions to produce a Cub Leaders Supplement with information only of interest to Cub Leaders. CONGRATULATIONS TO SIR MILES As you will probably have read in the local press, Sir Miles Walker took over as president of the Scout Association on New Years Day. I am sure I speak on behalf of everyone when I say how delighted and honoured we are that he has agreed to take up this position, and so help us progress scouting in the 21st Century. At the same time we must express our debt of gratitude to Victor Kneale as he retires from the presidency to become Vice President. I don’t think there is anyone who can match his dedication as, after 70 years service to scouting, he is still willing and able to offer further service to the movement. SCOUT COUNCIL Cunningham House Tuesday 9 April 7.30pm This annual meeting of all uniformed leaders from all sections has not taken place in the last couple of years. However it is a very important opportunity for all leaders to get together and discuss important policy issues affecting all groups. The meeting should also carry out an election and nominate the leaders’ representatives for the Island Executive Committee. Nominations for the election of lay members may also be considered. It is hoped that all leaders will be able to attend. ST GEORGES DAY 28 April Summerland Plans are progressing well for St George’s Day. The parade will be organised by Colin Brew, probably starting near the Hilton Hotel. We will parade to Summerland, where the Service will take part on the Piazza Level. Following the service, there will be activities, namely Manxland for the Beavers, Roller Blading for Cubs and football and climbing for the Scouts. Following the last joint scouters meeting, there will be no charge for the beavers, cubs or scouts. Further details will follow via this newsletter. I have already had offers from some sections to make a contribution to the service. If anyone else is able to take part please let me know details by the end of February, since I hope to be able to circulate an order of Service in March. QUEENS GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS Plans are also progressing to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. It is currently suggested that we hold a fair type event in the grounds of Government House on Sunday 14 July 10am-4.00pm. It is hoped that it will be a fun event for members and the general public alike. Tues 8 Jan. TT Race Committee Meeting, Cunningham House, 7.30pm Wed 9 Jan. Isle of Man Scouting email News No. 2 Assistant Island Commissioner Cub Scouts Celia Marshall email celiamarshall@hotmail.com 20.1.02 JAMBOREE SCOUTS MEET SIR MILES WALKER. Four scouts have fought off tough competition to be selected to represent the Island at the World Jamboree in Thailand next Christmas New Year 2002-3. They are Richard H. from 5th Douglas, Sam B. and David K. from 1st Douglas and Richard O. from 1st Ramsey. They were chosen from eleven worthy candidates by an exhaustive selection process, culminating in a formal interview in the Board Room of Duncan Lawrie Offices. In Thailand they will be among more than 30,000 scouts from hundreds of different countries around the world. They will spend four weeks away, included home stay with a local family, as well as camping at the jamboree. There will be no turkey and Christmas presents for these lads, since they will be away for Christmas, in a Moslem country that will not be celebrating Christmas. Each scout needs to raise £2.500 to fund the experience, and Duncan Lawrie has kindly donated to each scout £250 towards the project, as part of its continuing support on the Island of the Scout and Guide Movement. Sir Miles Walker, who was appointed the Island Scout Association President on 1 January of this year, offered his support and congratulations to the successful candidates at a reception in the Duncan Lawrie boardroom. This was his first official duty since taking up office, and he was welcomed and thanked by Alan Teare. The Island will also be represented by 1st Laxey Scout Leader Claire Parry who also underwent an extensive selection and traning programme in England in order to become part of the security staff at the Jamboree. NEW SECTIONS - ADDITIONAL AIC NEEDED As you will be aware, under the new programme, the age ranges for the sections will be as follows: Beaver Scouts 6-8 Cub Scouts 8-10 and half Scouts 10-14 Explorer Scouts 14-18 Scout Network 18-25 The groups will be deciding for themselves how they actually implement the changes, whether on a group basis or a mini district basis. However by the end of this year it is hoped to have an AIC responsible for each section. Colin Brew would like to take the role of AIC Scout Network, and Mike Southall hopes to take the position of AIC Explorer Scouts. That means that we need some one to come forward to take responsibility for the Scout Section. If anyone thinks they can fulfil that role and take Scouting forward for the benefit of the Island as a whole, please speak to one of the AICs. Don't be afraid to come and ask for more information. If you know anyone else who may be able to do the job, please let us know. SCOUTING MUSEUM We would like to set up a Scouting Museum housed at Cunningham House. There is a lot of valuable memorabilia, books etc which should be properly preserved and available for people to see. If you, or anyone you know, would be interested in helping with this project, please speak to a member of the Exec or one of the AICs. Obviously it could be someone who is not at present involved actively in the Movement, but who has an interest in history. FUTURE DATES Thurs 7 Feb, AIC/GSL Joint Scouters Meeting, Cat with no Tail, 7pm Tues 12 Feb, Cub Leaders Meeting, Horse and Plough, 8pm Tues 12 March, Island Exec Sat 16 March, Supersplash, Ramsey Swimming Pool Tues 9 April, SCOUT COUNCIL, ALL LEADERS INVITED TO ATTEND 7.30pm, Cunningham House.
