Successful Young Leaders Training Day

Twenty-two Young Leaders from all over the island took part in a training day in Ballasalla on January 15th. The focus of the day was Module A, the compulsory element of the Young Leader scheme covering the role of a Young Leader, child safety and protection, risk assessment and how the Young Leader scheme itself works. As well as the more formal aspects of the module, various activities including the Labyrinth ‘guttering’ challenge and Ready Steady Cook (Alphabet lunch) which encouraged the Young leaders to begin to consider how to lead and manage activities and tasks, what makes successful group work and the benefits of effective planning- i.e. learning through experience or active learning. The Young Leaders also discussed their various talents and skills- from sport, music and hobbies to the ability to lick their own nose- so expect creative and interesting future meetings for your sections!

All twenty-two Young Leaders were presented with the YL cloth badge, and the YL logbook so that they can track their progress through the YL scheme, and begin work towards YL Mission badges. Further YL module training opportunities will be made available later in the year.

Many thanks Kevin Bott (GSL) and Tom Bott (Quartermaster) at 1st Malew for the use of the hall and equipment. Thanks also to Neil Simpson (1st Douglas Scouts) and Steve White (Onchan and District Explorers) for their assistance, and Peter Young, the Island Commissioner for giving the opening welcome.
