Young people working in partnership with adults in Scouting, has always been something we have been proud of. Youth Shaped Scouting not only improves the way we Scout but also the young people involved. Learning to speak up, be heard and work towards improving something you are passionate about is an incredible learning experience for the youngest Beavers right the way through to our eldest Network members.
Following the success of last year’s #YouShape event we are excited to announce that #YouShape 2016 will be a week long focus on youth shaped scouting from the 1- 7 of February. We want all young people to be involved by having youth forums during the week. The main national event will be between the 5 – 7 of February 2016, not only will 200 young people between the ages of 14-25 be attending this event, but there will be a chance for young people across the movement to follow the conversation online and contribute.
We need your help to encourage volunteers to hold youth forums or other activities to engage their young people throughout that week. This could be anything from a county youth forum residential weekend to a 10 minutes log chew at Beavers – it is really up to you. If you already have events on that week then add #YouShape engagement into it as well. It is designed to fit into the programme rather than being and extra thing to do.
To support volunteers we will be releasing age appropriate resource packs to help deliver the forums (to be published soon) Within these packs there be a focus around several national topics you can discuss locally with your young people as well as space for you to add your own relevant topics. With your encouragement and support young people will have the opportunity at #YouShape to engage in a national conversation.
A national residential event will take place at Dearne Valley Activity Centre, Kingswood over the weekend of #YouShape Week (5-7 Feb 2016). We want 2 young people, one aged 14-18 and the other aged 18-25, from every county to attend the event. The applications for this are open now and we are hoping that you will encourage your young people, including your Local Youth Commissioner to apply using this survey. County Commissioners will be given the opportunity to comment on the people that have been selected (with a 2 week deadline). We will also let you know who was unsuccessful so you can support them to get involved in youth shaped scouting locally.
The majority of the cost for this event will be covered nationally, however locally will assist the young people with travel arrangements and a surplus cost of £15 for sustenance. We will plan for the young people to arrive on the Friday evening (between 18:00 and midnight) so they are able to meet fellow participants and engage with various informal activities.
