The initiative was taken by the recently reformed 6th Douglas (St Mary's) Troop to promote Scouting via the Douglas Carnival. On a lorry loaned by Okells Brewery and with artificial grass on loan from Gelling's Foundry in Victoria Street, they set up a mock camp. On the side of the lorry was a hand painted banner "Be Prepared - for tomorrows world", and across the back was the papal flag from which the scarf colours of yellow and white were taken. Standing beside the lorry is Jimmy Quinn, who had been involved with the Group in the immediate post war years and twenty years later was asked by Monsignor Mahony to get a Group up and running. He started with Cubs and moved into Scouts when some of the lads were old enough. For sometime he ran the Group single handed and then was helped by his eldest son John.
