1963 - 10th Douglas senior scouts in camp at Druidale. Wide games have always played an important role in Scout training, challenging Scouts to develop their skills in map and compass work, etc. Here the Drake Patrol - Malcolm Clague, Bruce Hannay, Roger Myers and Ian McLean, observed by Troop Leader, Mike Clague (and Hoss the sheep dog!) - find a clue in an old tree stump above Kirk Michael and have to solve a coded message in order to continue. Beside him is Valerie Duff, also of Ramsey, who had also just gained her Queen's Guide Badge. To the left of the picture is Colonel Brian Mylchreest, ADC to His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor and also a member of the Scout Executive Committee. In the 1960's, kayaks were very different to today's plastic ones. With the guidance of PE teacher Frank Gregory, 10th Douglas scouts built two PBK, 2-seater canoes in the old PE hut at St Ninians. The PBK's (Percy Blandford Kayaks) were designed especially for the Scout Movement and were constructed (as shown) of plywood frames covered by waterproofed canvas. Photo submitted by John Timson |

Here, in 1965, with the two PBK's, are some 10th Douglas Senior Scouts (P. Corlett, R. Myers, Malc. Clague, B. Hannay and R. Caley) canoeing off Douglas beach. Notice there was no specialist clothing in the 1960's either. These same kayaks were also used for a number of attempts to circumnavigate the Island. Photo submitted by John Timson |

8th/10th Douglas Senior Scouts in camp at Druidale - November 1963 Druidale, in the heart of the Island, became a favourite place for senior scout camps in the 1960's. This is a group of the lads gathered for supper in one of those upstairs rooms.
